1. Title of Dataset: Dataset on interacting spheres settling through rheological transition Data were collected in Laboratory of Hydrodynamic Micromodels, Institute of Geophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences 2. Folder List: Folder Settling_experiments contains two sub-folders with data for each experimental set. AS36_AS36XG0.5 - experiment with seawater layer (AS36) overlying a seawater (AS36) with dispersed 0.5 g/L of xanthan gum; AS36_AS36XG1 - experiment with seawater layer (AS36) overlying a seawater (AS36) with dispersed 1.0 g/L of xanthan gum; AS36_AS42XG0.5 - experiment with seawater layer (AS36) overlying a seawater (AS42) with dispersed 0.5 g/L of xanthan gum; AS36_AS42XG1 - experiment with seawater layer (AS36) overlying a seawater (AS42) with dispersed 1.0 g/L of xanthan gum; where XG - xanthan gum, AS - artificial seawater, number indicates concentration of salts and xanthan gum in g/L. and sub-folder density profiles containing measured density profiled in the test column. 3. Additional related data collected that was not included in the current data package: Data on the rheological properties of solutions stored in Rheological_data folder. 4. Methodological information: Experiments were performed in 50 cm x 11 cm 11 cm transparent tank filled with two-layered liquid. Temperature of liquid was 21 C deg (+- 1 C deg). Solid spheres were released below liquid surface to settle gravitationally to observe their interactions at rheological transition. The process was recorded using two cameras positioned orthogonal to each other. Cameras fied of view covered 77-mm-high and 62-mmwide area with one pixel corresponding to 31 μm. To measure vertical density profile in a test column, about 2 ml of test liquid was sampled every 5 mm and density was measured using DMA 4100 M (Anton Paar) densimeter with an accuracy of 0.0001 g cm-3 in a controlled temperature with an accuracy of 0.03 ◦C. 5. Data-specific information: Sub-folders avi files with pairs of films. avi files are named after type of sphere. Twotypes of spheres made of polyoxymethylene (density of 1.37 g/cm3) were tested: S1 with diameter of 1.50 mm S2 with diameter of 2.90 mm Density profile folder contains csv files with two columns: z - vertical location, the forst row corresponds to the upper edge of film images.
