Ice distribution in Hornsund fjord, Svalbard from Sentinel-1A (2023-2025)

This dataset contains binary maps of ice (1) and open water (0) in Hornsund fjord, Svalbard at 50 m resolution. The maps are based on the Sentinel-1A SAR archive between 1.07.2023 and 31.08.2025 with an average image frequency of 1.79 days. This dataset is an extension of the Sentinel-1A/B-based one ending on 29.06.2023 (https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.963167; Swirad et al., 2023) processed in the way described in Swirad et al., 2024. A document containing details on the scenes and polarisation channels used, the number of segments and the level of manual editing is provided.

  • Project title: HIRLOMAP: High resolution and local sea ice product generation for arctic operations Project ID: 4000146036/24/I-DT-bgh Project description: To address the Arctic operations priority area within the ESA’s SUP Initiative we established the project HIRLOMAP. Our focus is towards (a) tactical product delivery (sea ice maps, short-term forecasts of ice conditions, simulations of ice dynamics) for detailed local analysis in the vicinity of a vessel or offshore structure to support immediate operations or operation planning, (b) extending detection capabilities to smaller icebergs and more detailed ice type / open water separation for route planning, (c) providing local charts of fast and fjord ice conditions to local communities for evaluations of the safety of on-ice travels, and (d) monitoring of coastal sea ice for research on coastal erosion and flooding. The required product coverage is tens of kilometers with the highest possible spatial resolution between 5 and 50 meters. For the project we use data from SAR, optical and thermal satellite sensors.
